Cool video from an amazing public rehearsal with SWR Orchestra. The musicians work on Adagio from Prokofiev’s 5th Symphonia. Teodor speaks English language. He talks about amazing things, and amazing thoughts, and he demonstrates amazingly how to conduct. Must.

Teodor’s explanation to the audience before the rehearsal:

Hello, dear friends!

What we gonna do today. First of all we gonna be happy.

You see how important this for us to be close. We were playing all this period with corona in a very different… well… We couldn’t play a piece like this. First of all, this is great happiness.

And now, I think, after a long period of silence of the symphonic music, it’s time to start again with a new idea about the future of our artistry and about future of our music.

What is the future of music?

*talking to the audience* The future of music is our contribution with you. It is when this part that separates us from the audience will be destroyed.

Of course, it something metaphorical. Most of the orchestras believe they have achieved the certain height of light, and the audience just by tradition come to listen to the music. “And we play. And we understand of they understand or don’t understand. And they will never understand”.

But that is not true!

In fact most of musicians in the orchestras and conductors – they don’t really understand what they are doing.
It is not just to reproduce the notes, and to play in tune and in the rhythm. Of course this is important, and this is a technical part. But what is between the chords? What is between the music? How to explore and to speak the language of the dream? When we see things when they are uncertain for a structure of our mind. But in fact they are certain in another way. In the way of the intuition.

So, to trust to intuition and to connect the intuitions of people – that is the big work, and the result of that gives you another flash of intuition.

So, what I was saying, the future of music is not in how well or bad we are gonna play. It is in your understanding of what we are doing.

In one hundred years the audience that truly understands all this language of the dreams. And then they can speak this Esperanto of the angels, as I say. Then the musicians will be to obliged to talk fluently in this language. And not just to play up-down, left-right, loud-soft. This is not music. Of course, as you will see now, this is an important part to describe some things of the music. But music is something else. It is intuition.

So, I think this is a beautiful moment when we gonna build a piece in front of your eyes.

We are gonna stop a lot of times. If I would play this piece once, maybe you like the way we play it. This is the great orchestra, they play very well. But it’s not about you like it, or not. It is about do we talk about the same things, or we don’t. *talking to the orchestra* First of all: are we talking about the same things? *talking to the audience* And then: do you get the message we want to give you?

All these fundamental questions are super – for me – important.

So, you will see one of the most beautiful pieces.

Let’s play.
